We the undersigned are calling on our elected officials to pass the Camp Lejeune Justice Act (S. 3176, H.R. 2192). This simple yet important legislation represents a landmark step toward justice and accountability for Marines, their family members, civilian workers and other on-base personnel who were harmed by contaminated water at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Between August 1, 1953 and December 31, 1987, persons living, working and training on Camp Lejeune may have been exposed to water contaminated with benzene, industrial solvents including PCE and TCE, and other toxicants. These substances, which are known to cause cancer and other severe illnesses, were found at levels 240 - 3400 times the safe levels for human exposure. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), the water at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was contaminated for over thirty years.
The Janey Ensminger Act of 2012 established medical care for victims of Camp Lejeune water contamination. Through this legislation, the federal government acknowledged the link between water contamination at Camp Lejeune and a number of serious illnesses, including: esophageal cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, multiple myeloma, renal toxicity, female infertility, scleroderma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, lung cancer, bladder cancer, leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, hepatic steatosis, miscarriage, and various neurobehavioral effects.
According to a 2010 House Oversight Subcommittee Meeting, leadership at the Marine Corps Base Camp first learned of the water contamination in 1982 yet did not eliminate the poisoned wells until the end of 1985. Every illness and death stemming from these four years could have been prevented. We call on our elected officials to act swiftly to remedy these wrongs.
A legal hurdle in North Carolina law has prevented Veterans and family members harmed by Camp Lejeune water contamination from bringing their cases to court. These are dedicated servicemembers and their families, who have made significant sacrifices to be of service to their country. From pain and suffering, to the loss of a loved one or the miscarriage of a baby, these families have experienced harm that spans generations.
As signers of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act Petition, we call on you, our elected officials, to remedy this deep injustice. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act would enable victims and their loved ones to finally bring their claims to court. Now is the time to bring judicial relief to veterans and families harmed by the water contamination at Camp Lejeune.
Serving our nation is the greatest act of patriotism and these selfless servants have been waiting too long for justice. In the name of our Veterans and their families, we deplore you to act swiftly to pass the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.
The Camp Lejeune Justice Act Petition Calls on Senators to Act
"I am proud to introduce this legislation with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to bring justice for our veterans and their families and provide a fix so these victims have access to courts and the judicial system like they would in other states and territories." Senator Thomas Tillis
By passing the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, elected officials will send a message to veterans and their families that the government sees their suffering and seeks to make amends. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act is currently under consideration in the Senate as S. 3176. This bill was brought forth by a bipartisan group of senators in November of 2021: Republicans Thomas Tillis (NC) and Richard Burr (NC) and Democrats Richard Blumenthal (CT) and Gary Peters (MI).
"This bill vindicates victims of Camp Lejeune's contaminated water. Far too many veterans, their family members, and others have suffered from debilitating, deadly diseases resulting from their exposure on base. Granting victims their overdue day in court is a step toward justice and accountability." Senator Blumenthal, member of the Senate Veterans' Affairs and Judiciary Committees
